A School Table Tennis Team Individual Competition was held
at Chellaston School on Wednesday 3rd
February in which pupils (year 7/8) from 5 Schools /
Colleges took part.
Bemrose School, Chellaston School,
Derby Moor School,
Lees Brook Community College Sports College,
Landau Forte
The Competition was timed to be completed in no more than
105 minutes.
The boys were put into 12 groups of three, each player
playing the other two in the group one game up to 11
points. Group winners etc were decided using the total
number of points score by each player.
The winners from each group were then put into a second set
of groups and the same approach adopted.
The winners of this second round went into the Semi final
knockout and then Final.
The
girls (4 only) played a round robin with everyone
playing one another in two set games, the winner and
runner up taking part in a final play off.
Both Boys and Girls events went well with some quality
table played in an enthusiastic and sporting manner and
were a credit to their respective Schools/Colleges. It
is hoped that all those taking part will continue to
enjoy playing and improve their game and interest in the
sport.
Boys Event
Boys from Chellaston School (2), Derby Moor and Leesbrook
reached the semi – finals, which were played as best of
three games of 11. Harry Simpson from Derby Moor School
and George Newhall from Chellaston School won closely
fought battles to make the Final.
The Final also proved to be a close affair with some
excellent Table Tennis from both players with Harry
Simpson proving the more resilient, winning the event.
Girls Event
Despite all the Girls coming from Bemrose School,
nevertheless the event also saw some good play with
close games. The winners of the round robin were Paige
Roome-Hanson and Fatuma Mohammed who played out a Final
in which Paige proved just too strong for Fatuma.
I
wish to thank all the school for taking part and
Chellaston School for hosting the event. Also my thanks
to Derby Table Tennis players for their assistance
without whom the event would not have been completed and
Chloe Morley Derby Sports & Leisure Competitions Manager
for facilitating the Schools involvement.
The British Universities Championships were
held last weekend at the Jubilee Campus of
Nottingham University. 210 students played
in 5 events over the 2 days. The Littleover
Club in Derby had links with 3 of the
players and they had mixed fortunes.
In the Men's Singles Ian Ashburner
(Southampton U) went out at the group stage
but Michael Lowden (Birmingham) came through
the group stage and won his match in the
first round. His luck ran out because he
then met Tim Yarnall the No2 seed and went
out -7, -7, -3. Ian did not fare so well
either in the Men's Doubles and Mixed
Doubles - going out in the first rounds.
Daria Dzierbicka had a good run in the
Women's Singles. She beat the No 10 seed at
the group stage and then the No 5 seed in 5
games despite being faulted twice on her
backhand serve. She started well in the next
round holding the No1 seed to 22-24 in the
first game. A surprise result was not to be
and she eventually lost -22, -6, 8, -8. A
good run which brought her to the notice of
the Derbyshire County Secretary who is
always looking to strengthen the County
Ladies team.
The Men's Singles was won by Daniel Zwickel
(Leeds Metropolitan) who is from Hungary and
ranked 111 in the world. The Women's Singles
was won by Ling Yu Yang (Liverpool).
The next national junior tournament will be
the Derby 4* held at Moorways on 13th/14th
March. Most of the countries top junior

The East Midlands 4* table tennis tournament
for juniors was held over the weekend with
over 220 entries despite the icy conditions
still on the roads. Abbie Milwain (Chellaston
Senior School and the Draycott Club) was the
player from Derby to watch in the junior
girls singles event. Abbie who is ranked 11
in England was seeded to at least reach the
semi finals in this event. She made good
progress thru the group stage and in the
first round beat Hannah Noutch (Lincoln) in
straight games. Abbie did the same to Vicky
Smith (Devon) in the next round. She looked
to be going the same way against Welsh star
Chloe Thomas by winning the first game
11-5. The Welsh girl rallied in the next to
win it 13-11 and the next 2 games 11-9 and
11-9. Chloe went on to lose to the top seed
Yolanda King (Sussex) in the final.
Abbie Milwain (Chellaston
Senior School and the Long Eaton/Draycott Club) had
a good day at the English Junior Closed table tennis
tournament at the English Institute of Sport at
Sheffield. Abbie is now ranked 10 in the English
Junior Girls listing and was drawn with a good
chance of at least reaching the quarter final
stages. This she achieved with a notable scalp.
Abbie won all her group stage matches and then beat
Sophie Neil (Nottingham) in the first round. In the
second round Abbie beat Natali Slater (Stafford) who
is ranked at No7 in England. Her good run was
stopped by Vicky Smith (Devon) in the quarterfinal.
In the Junior doubles
with Laura Robinson (Yorkshire) Abbie reached the
semi-finals after 2 good wins. There they went
down 1-3 to event winners Chloe Whyte/Jessica Dawson

The league this year has entered
2 teams in the veterans midlands league. In
their opening games results were as follows:
Derby A won 9-1 against Nuneaton B, and Derby B
narrowly lost 4-6 to Birmingham E.
Derby A are in Division 2 after
being promoted two divisions. Jon Bayliss 3,
Paul Jennings 3, Dave Fox 2 and the doubles.
Derby B are starting out as a new
team in Division 4. Theresa Richardson 3, Steve
Gillott 1, Ralf Dowding 0.
The Derbyshire junior team played
in the Junior County Championship premier
division on the 17th/18th
October in Slough. The Derbyshire team,
including Abbie Milwain of Draycott and Long
Eaton TT club played teams from Kent, Essex and
Yorkshire. They lost all the matches, but Abbie
had a good personal performance winning all 6 of
her singles games.
Several Draycott and Long Eaton players made the most of
home advantage to be among the prizes at the Derby
League’s Closed Championships. Castle Donington’s Trevor
Kerry was the event’s other big winner as he walked away
with 3 of the 11 titles that were on offer during a busy
day’s play at Draycott Table Tennis Centre.
Men’s
Singles
Following the withdrawal of no.2 seed David Arrowsmith,
it was always quite likely that Castle Donington
teammates Trevor Kerry and Mark Green, who top the Derby
Premier Division averages, would progress through to
this show-piece final. Kerry dispatched Michael Lowden,
Peter Hodgson, Simon Hall and Stuart McIntyre on his
route to the final while Green got past Alastair
Hawthorn, Matt Satchwell, Paul Jennings and the
ever-impressive Keith Fellows.
The final itself lived up to expectations, as the
tournament favourites fought out an exciting 5-game
battle. Kerry had chances to finish the match in the
4th, but squandered match points as Green defended
resolutely. The deciding end was contested just as
keenly as the preceding four. However, this time when he
edged ahead, Trevor held his nerve to narrowly win 11-9
and later joked that the result was “never in doubt”!

League Match Secretary, Aubrey Henry [right].
Veteran’s Singles
Trevor Kerry continued his dazzling form to add the
Veteran’s award to his tally, overcoming Jim Naunton,
Colin Ambrose, Pete Hodgson and Nigel Adams en route to
the final.
He
was joined by Keith Fellows, who beat Gordon Taylor and
Pirelli’s Pat Hall before enjoying a walkover into the
semis. There, Keith had to be sharp to knock-out regular
sparring partner from the Draycott club, Jon Bayliss.
Kerry
took charge of the opening exchanges of the final and
seemed to be heading for a comfortable quick-fire win.
However, a stubborn fightback and some sublime
shot-making by Fellows levelled the score at 2-all.
Trevor sured up his game in the 5th and took it with
some room to spare as Keith’s onslaught abated.
Women’s Singles
Due
to the small number of entrants, this event was played
as a group format rather than the traditional knock-out.
Draycott’s Jane Vickers showed her class by dropping
only 1 game as she dominated the field. Jane began with
a comprehensive 11-8, 11-5, 11-0 win over Liz Merrick
before being given a sterner examination by Helen
Rainford (11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9). After gaining an easy
straight-game win over Jackie Meakin, Vickers faced
Sandra Hewitt in what turned out to be the
title-decider.
Hewitt too had an unblemished record to this point,
having already defeated Meakin, Merrick (both 3-0) and
Rainford (3-1). However, she was overpowered by Vickers
(11-6, 11-6, 12-10), who found Hewitt’s pimpled rubbers
to be of little inconvenience.
Junior Boy’s Singles
Draycott Junior, Alastair Hawthorn, added to his
impressive haul from last month’s Loughborough
tournament, in which he claimed 2 prizes. Alastair was
not overly extended as he claimed the Junior Boy’s
round-robin event ahead of Andrew Pollitt and James
Eason, without ever looking like losing an end.
Handicap Singles
Another Draycott player, Craig Witton, got in on the act
to claim the top prize in the Handicap event. Despite
giving away a 4-point start, he knocked out club-mates
Mark Rhowbotham and Mark Southern before then beating
Kalpesh Bhatt off scratch. Witton made light of a
2-point deficit to see off Aubrey Henry in the
quarter-finals before beating Robin Honey 3-0 off
scratch to secure a final berth with Dave Walton.
Walton was given a bye through the preliminary stage,
before coming through a tough tie against fellow
Jacksdale MW player, Paul Linfield. He then disposed of
Littleover pair Andrew Pollitt and Nav Hussain to earn
his place in the final. With both players being from
Division 1, it was no surprise that Witton, who heads
the division’s win averages, came out on top.

In the semi-final, Craig Witton [left]
defeated Robin Honey [right] on his road to the Handicap
Singles title.
Division 1 Singles
Craig
Witton doubled his bounty with another display of his
Premier Division pedigree in the Division 1 competition.
After accounting for Rolls Royce’s Sandra Hewitt, Craig
scored an emphatic 11-3, 11-6, 11-9 victory over
Jacksdale’s Kalpesh Bhatt to set up a final against Paul
Linfield.
Linfield made Witton work hard for the opening game,
eventually going down 13-15 but from that point on,
Witton took over, with his explosive top-spin attacks
helping him to end the match 11-6, 11-8.
Division 2 Singles
Littleover’s Aubrey Henry edged a tight topsy-turvy
final match against Spondon’s Martin Coe. Aubrey took
the first end 11-8 and the players then proceeded to
take it in turns to win games by similarly narrow
margins. Henry had a chance to break the sequence at
deuce in the 4th, but Coe kept dug in to force a
decider, which Henry took 11-5.
Tony
Young and Gordon Taylor were the beaten semi-finalists,
losing to Henry and Coe, respectively.
Division 3 Singles
Alastair Hawthorn had no difficulties in navigating a
serene passage through the top half of the draw, seeing
off Bryan Allen, Malcolm Barlow and Jim Naunton with
ease. Austen Garwood-Gowers made it through the tougher
half of the draw to join him after getting the better of
Mark Southern, Dave Wood and myself.
Austen started brightly, taking the first game 11-7 but
the talented 13-year-old Hawthorn found focus and put
his superior attacking play into action to pocket the
subsequent three games 11-5, 13-11 and 11-7.

Alastair Hawthorn’s [near] beat Austen
Garwood-Gowers [far] to add the Division 3 Singles title
to his Junior Boy’s prize.
Men’s
Doubles
Trevor Kerry and Mark Green were an unstoppable force in
the top half of the draw, defeating solid pairings from
Draycott, Littleover and Jacksdale on their way to the
final. In the other half, last year’s winners, Keith
Fellows and Stuart McIntyre faced a repeat of last
year’s final in the last four when they encountered Jon
Bayliss and Colin Ambrose. The result was the same as
last season and Fellows/McIntyre advanced.
However, the Castle Donington duo was not to be denied
and was victorious in a high-quality final.

Trevor Kerry [left] and Mark Green [2nd

Keith Fellows [2nd right] under the watchful gaze of Les
Allwood.
Women’s Doubles
An
unfamiliar pairing of Jane Vickers and Helen Rainford
warmed up for the May finals of the
English Leagues Cup Competition, in which they will
represent Derby, by effortlessly triumphing in the
Women’s Doubles event. Jane and Helen gained
back-to-back straight-game wins to secure first place in
this round-robin contest.
Sandra Hewitt and Liz Merrick were runners-up by virtue
of their 3-1 victory over Jackie Meakin and Pat Pidcock.
Mixed
Doubles
Helen
Rainford gained her second doubles victory of the
tournament, this time with her more regular partner,
Keith Fellows. In the process, the duo became the only
winners from 2008 to successfully defend their title
this year.
Rainford and Fellows faced arguably their biggest threat
in the semi-finals when they met the experienced team of
Jane Vickers and Colin Ambrose. Last year’s champions
went through after a well-deserved 3-1 win and repeated
that scoreline in the final against Jon Bayliss and
Sandra Hewitt.

On 1st March 2009
the Derbyshire Closed Table Tennis Championships
were held in Chesterfield. This was a very
successful tournament for Derby based players.
In the Open Mens Singles
event David Arrowsmith of Draycott and Long Eaton
Table Tennis Club won through to face former team
mate and ex Derby League player Adam Frost in the
final. Adam (who now plays much of his Table Tennis
in Nottingham) turned out to be too strong for David
and ran out winning 3 sets to 0 (11-5 11-8 11-7).
Abbie Milwain (also from
Draycott and Long Eaton TTC) played very well to add
more titles to her collection. She gathered both the
Cadet and Junior Girls titles, before being narrowly
beaten over 5 sets in the final of the womens
singles by Meri Isherwood.
David and Abbie teamed up to
gain revenge for their singles defeats in the mixed
doubles. In the final they faced the number 1 seeds
Adam Frost and Meri Isherwood, winning the title in
a close 5 set game ( 17-15 2-11 7-11 11-6 13-11).
Jon Bayliss, again of Draycott
and Long Eaton TTC, teamed up with Adam Frost for a
comfortable win in the Mens Doubles competition 11-5
11-8 11-6 over Geoff Gill and Tony Gregory.
Yolanda King from Hastings and Matt Ware from Poole were
both crowned the City of Derby Junior Champions, and
took their trophies and Jarvis Sports winner’s vouchers
back home with them to the south coast.
Day two of the Derby 4 star event got
under way on Sunday the 15th of March, and
what a treat the spectators and players alike had in
store!
The Junior Girls final between Yolanda
King and Emily Bates was a fantastic match full of drama
and suspense, but it was the excitement and upsets that
led to the closing stages.
Yolanda ranked 10 in Junior Girls has
really come of age and is a force to be reckoned with.
Her route to the final saw her endure early round
matches against Kirsty Wilson, Abbie Milwain and then
enjoy a fantastic win over higher ranked Natalie Slater,
coming back from a set down to take the next three and
book her place in the final.
In the top half of the draw Emily Bates
was easing her way through to the last match by having
to much firepower against Sophie Neil, Evangeline
Collier, and semi finalist Rachel Baker to also make the
final.
The Under 18 Junior Girls’ Open final was
a real jem of a match, and had the crowd on the edge of
their seats. With Yolanda trailing 1-2 in sets the
writing looked on the wall for the top seeded Bates to
come through. Both girls received excellent coaching
advice from their corners, after each end, and it seemed
whichever of the girls got in with the opening first
strong attack would see out the point. The last two ends
were a credit to both these young ladies, with crowd
pleasing hard hitting rallies yet with finesse from
receive of service. It was Yolanda who managed to get in
front in the fourth end to level the match. In a nail
biting dramatic final leg, Yolanda gained her revenge
from yesterday’s Cadet final, and took the title 11-8 in
the last end from a spirited performance from last
year’s winner, Emily Bates.
The Under 18 Junior Boys’ Open event went
to 2nd seeded Matt Ware, who managed to
outpoint Danny Lowe in a four sets final.
Due to the withdrawal of the 3rd
and 7th seed from Ware’s half of the draw,
the top half, which included top seed Chris Doran, Danny
Lowe, Kim Daybell and Stewart Mudie, had a distinct
tougher look to it.
Danny Lowe, a young man from Chesterfield
who has continued a sharp upwards curve in the last two
years, and come on in leaps and bounds, was the star of
the top half of the draw. He had a real fight on his
hands in the quarter final against Jide Owolabi coming
through in a great match that had a huge crowd gathered
to watch. Five exciting and top draw rally packed sets
followed with every point receiving oohs and aahs from
the audience. To Lowe’s great credit he weathered the
storm, and then found himself in another five set epic
against Stewart Mudie, somehow managing to pull that
match out of the bag!
Not content with two tough matches, Danny
faced tournament favourite Chris Doran in the semi
final. The stage was set on the show court for yet
another unbelievable five set contest, akin to two
fighters slugging it out to the bitter end. Doran was
quick out of the blocks getting in the first blow, 11-4,
and it seemed that Lowe was possibly a spent force.
No-way! His coach gave him some excellent advice, and
from there on in his placement from his backhand wing to
Doran’s centre proved decisive. Mentally Lowe is strong
and backs that up with nice touches and early flicks off
the Doran tight serves which held the key. In a
wonderful spectacle from both these young men, Danny ran
out a remarkable 3 sets to 2 winner to face Matt Ware in
the final.
Ware had a relatively easy passage to the
final, outplaying James Ward, Scott Lawson and semi
finalist Ping Ho in straight sets to set up his final
contest with Lowe.
The Junior Boys’ final always looked in
Ware’s grasp, seeming to have that extra fire and depth
to his aggressive shots, and although Lowe levelled the
match at 1 set all, his earlier exertions took their
toll. Both players treated the spectators to those
accustomed back from the table looping topspin rallies,
however the more experienced Ware took control of the
last two ends to close out the final 3 sets to 1.
The last events of the second day’s play
saw William Morais from Middlesex take the Junior Boys’
Band 1 title from Joel Carton in a straight sets final,
whilst Rebecca George from Yorkshire got the better of
Sushmita Limbu 3-1 in the Junior Girls’ Band 1 final
event.
It is impossible to stage and run
excellent events such as the City of Derby Junior Open
without the incredible team of Organisers and helpers
over the two-day tournament. A huge vote of thanks must
be paid to Referee Tim Harris and his deputy Mike Payne,
and of course Tournament organiser Brian Webster
together with so many local volunteers. We must never
forget the huge contribution made by those unsung heroes
of our sport, the ETTA umpires, many of which worked for
hours over this weekend without taking a break! Many
thanks to you all.

The action came thick and fast at the
Moorways Sports Centre, home of the City of Derby 4 star
Cadet and Junior Open over the weekend of the 14th
and 15th of March 2009. The tournament
attracted a huge entry with players competing from all
over England, and a warm Derbyshire welcome was extended
to a party of 14 junior Appleby academy players that had
flown over from the Island of Jersey.
The Under 13 and Cadet events took centre
stage on day one at this popular nineteen table venue,
and it was Igor Morais from Middlesex and Annabelle
Gibson from Essex that were making the early headlines.
Igor “The Destroyer” was in superlative
form in winning the Under 13 Boys’ Open Singles event,
but boy oh boy did he have to work for his title. The
Greenhouse Progress superstar had to pull out all the
stops in his semi final encounter with top seeded
Helshan Weerasinghe. Coming back from what looked an
impossible situation, after losing the first set and
being 2-9 down in the second, somehow he managed to turn
it round and go on to record a fantastic 3-1 victory to
reach the final. Meanwhile in the lower half of the draw
Jared Patel was making stealthy headway towards a final
place, not dropping a set, and outplaying Sam Mabey 3-0,
at the penultimate stage.
The final was a cracker between two very
young men giving it their all.
Igor eventually getting the upper hand to
run out the winner in 4 tight sets against Jared to be
crowned a well deserved Derby Under 13 Boys’ Champion.
Annabelle Gibson from the famous Essex
Peniel Academy, and one of many that hail from the Nicky
Jarvis conveyor belt of young table tennis stars of the
future, came through to take the Under 13 Girls’ Open
title, however it wasn’t all plain sailing for her. Her
final opponent unseeded Elizabeth Roberts from Wales
fought tooth and nail, with both girls giving everything
in a close encounter of the fifth kind.
In the early sets there were many
extended long rallies with at times emotions running
high from both players. The five set marathon then
turned into a last set tactical and cagey affair with
neither girl wanting to make a mistake keeping the ball
on the table! Annabelle to her vast credit kept mentally
strong throughout this long last leg coming through to
take the Under 13 Girls’ Open title 12-10 in a nerve
jingling final points set.
Later in the Day the Cadet Boys’ and
Girls’ Open events were staged.
England Cadet International, 13 year old
Emily Bates, fresh and on cloud nine from her recent and
historic Senior National Championship win in the Women’s
doubles with partner Mary Fuller, proved to be in a
class of her own in coming through virtually unscathed
to win the Cadet Girls’ Open title.
Emily’s route to the latter stages was at
the expense of Estelle Purkis, Vicky Smith and then
Abbie Milwain at the last four stage. Her final
challenge came from a very spirited Yolanda King, who
had earlier enjoyed victories over Ify Okafor,
Evangeline Collier, and semi final opponent Laura
Robinson. Yolanda took the first set off the Champion,
but that was as good as it got with Emily taking yet
another City of Derby 4 star title, after winning the
Under 13 and Junior Girls’ Open titles last year.
Helshan Weerasinghe put the earlier
disappointment firmly behind him from losing out in the
semi final stage of the Under 13 Boys’ event, to fight
his way through in true grit style at every stage to
take the Cadet Boys’ Open title.
Helshan, a really exciting prospect who
hails from the Horsham Table Tennis Club, although
resident in Kent, celebrated an early birthday present
(he is 12 on Wednesday) by taking the title in straight
sets over finalist Jared Patel. His pathway to glory was
enjoyed by gaining hard fought victories over Sam Maybey,
Josh Boult and semi finalist Ross Wilson to then meet
Patel in the final. Losing finalist Jared Patel was
magnificent during this competition coming through the
rounds brushing aside the likes of Scott Dowsett, Adam
Harrison and Jarred Knowles. He then followed up by a
fabulous success over Azarel Adebanjo at the last four
stage, but unfortunately was no match for Weerasinghe in
the last encounter.
The last events of a busy first day’s
schedule were the Under 15 Banded Girls’ and Boys’
singles.
Sushmita Limbu nosed her head in front in an epic final
battle against Majada Yasmin, winning 12-10 in the fifth
end, whilst Kallum Reed took the boys’ equivalent in a
3-1 scoreline final against Sam Mabey.

This
is a Computer Ranking Tournament approved by the ETTA
Ltd,
the DTTA and organised by the Derby and
District TTA.
THIS TOURNAMENT IS ONE OF THE JARVIS SPORT JUNIOR GRAND
PRIX SERIES EVENTS
Held at the Littleover Community School on Sunday 9
November on a very rainy day. Organised by Marilyn
O'Sullivan, tournament referee Malcolm Hearn.
Considering that this was the first Schools event held
this season we had one of the best entries ever 50
players in total. 15 of these were from Littleover Table
Tennis Club who had the opportunity to play against good
players from a number of towns in and around Derbyshire.
It was pleasing to see an increase in the number of girl
entries, all four girls events were well supported. The
boys events proved very popular with the U16's having 6
groups in the first round.
Results as follows.
